How Has The American Dream Changed Over Time
It was James Truslow Adams who first coined the term "The American Dream" in his volume THE EPIC OF AMERICA written in 1931. He writes that the American dream is:
"...that dream of a land in which life should be improve and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or accomplishment.
It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages just, just a dream of social order in which each human being and each woman shall exist able to reach to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and exist recognized past others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."
Simply Barbara Ehrenreich, who has lived, worked and fought along side low-wage workers has witnessed the growing disparity of wages betwixt the rich and poor. The hopes and dreams of many of the workers she's been hearing from seem to differ from the definition above. Says Ehrenreich:
"There was ane woman who said something to me that was and so poignant. Speaking of her hopes for the future, she said, 'My large wish would be to have a job which if I missed work one 24-hour interval, similar for a kid dwelling sick or something, I would however be able to buy groceries for the next day.' And I thought, yep, that's quite a hope."
How would y'all define the American Dream?
